Does This Cartoon Capture the TSA Screening Process?

October 23, 2009 | Posted in: Security,Travel Safety | 6 comments

I found the following cartoon on a wonderful and whimsical site called xkcd.com – and feel it just might crystallize today’s airport security screening

UPDATE: The TSA responds with an informative post – a good read.

Pilots Who Overshot Landing: Excuse of the Year?

October 23, 2009 | Posted in: News,Northwest,Pilots | 1 comment

The big question is “why”.

Why did those Northwest pilots traveling from San Diego to Minneapolis Wed. night overshoot their landing by 150 miles (you read that right – I was wrong when I first reported “100 miles”).

There is speculation that they were sleeping – at this point, that’s all it is, speculation – but there were tense times during saga when air traffic controllers feared the plane had been hijacked! That’s because when the pilots finally made radio contact – after being incommunicado for more than an hour – air traffic controllers described the crew’s responses as “vague”.

The pilots’ excuse?

According to an official press release from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) which is investigating the incident, The crew stated they were in a heated discussion over airline policy and they lost situational awareness.”

That must have been some argument.

The pilots, meanwhile, have been suspended – and the NTSB says it is scheduling an interview with them.

5th Airfare Hike of the Year is “Sticking” as More Airlines Join In

October 23, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News,Holiday Travel | 0 comments

An update:

That small airfare hike – mostly $10 roundtrip – initiated Wednesday evening by both Delta/Northwest and Continental is, as I like to say, “sticking”.

In other words, it appears to be here to stay – for awhile anyway.

American Airlines was the first to match, yesterday morning – and by last night the rest of the legacy airlines – United and US Airways – had joined in.

Still waiting to see if the low cost carriers will take part.

In the meantime, my advice remains the same: if you’re going to travel during the holiday season, the time to buy your tickets is now. First, check out our Holiday Travel Guide 2009 and then, head on over to FareCompare’s deal finder for the best deals from your airport.

Northwest Pilots Allegedly Sleep, Overshoot Destination

October 22, 2009 | Posted in: News,Northwest,Pilots | 1 comment

You may recall some recent posts I’ve done – about the possibility of allowing pilots to nap in the cockpit – and now, it seems, the subject is more timely than ever.

That’s because of this incident that happened just last night: Pilots on a Northwest Airlines flight from San Diego to Minneapolis temporarily lost radio contact with air traffic controllers and overshot their destination by 100 miles.

According to the Wall St. Journal, the pilots are being investigated for possibly falling asleep. No one was injured in the incident.

Mental Health Break: Dating on Airplanes

October 22, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Destinations,Favorites,Passengers | 0 comments

Okay, it’s not quite Friday, but I think we could all use a little comic relief in the wake of airfare hikes and airport lunacy

Anyway, as reported on MSNBC, Air New Zealand has designated one of its regular flights from Los Angeles to Auckland earlier this month as a “Matchmaking Flight” – and it quickly sold out.

There was champagne and chocolates for the singles onboard, plus getting-to-know-you games, singing and dancing by the crew, and much, much more.

I can’t tell if Air New Zealand has another dating flight in the works, though I suspect there will be more, because 1.) a good time was apparently had by all and 2.) the airline’s slogan is, “Make Flying Fun Again”. Sounds like mission accomplished to me (and if anyone out there was on this flight, tell us about it).

Alert: Delta/Northwest and Continental Hike Airfare Prices

UPDATE: American Airlines has now joined in this latest airfare hike.

Wednesday night, in the 8pm EDT domestic airfare distribution, both Delta/Northwest and Continental simultaneously hiked the airfares on the bulk of their respective route systems – by $10 roundtrip (though Continental also had a smattering of $6 and $4 roundtrip hikes, as well).

More information on any matching activity – or rollback activity – will be reported as it becomes available.

This latest airfare increase is a wakeup call for holiday procrastinators: if you plan to fly during the holidays, you should be shopping now and buying those holiday tickets as soon as possible.

Southwest Airlines – Going Green to Panama City

October 21, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Southwest | 2 comments

I spent the better part of the day out at Hangar 5 and Freedom Hall at Southwest Airlines corporate headquarters just off the fence line of Dallas Love Field.

It is a stretch to call what we do "mainstream media" but the good folks at Southwest Airlnes have invited me twice now to their annual "Media Day" and for that I count them as in the "get it" category when it comes to "new media".

They wouldn't have one of these shindigs if they weren't going to announce something -- and of course speculation was running rampant, from possible new cities like Honolulu, San Juan to changes in their Rapid Reward Progam. I had even suggested in jest on Twitter they might switch to Airbus (of course I should know better than to joke on Twitter as a few commenters questioned my judgment -- as Southwest only has 500+ Boeing 737's).

It was clear when I arrived this morning that we were going to take a tour of the cabin of a 737 since it was sitting front and center, with a person doing some last minute touch up paint (I presume for the photo op).

Keeping reading for a rundown on what's new and what's "green"... Southwest Airlines – Going Green to Panama City

Virgin America to Allow “No Bag” Passengers to Board First

October 21, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News | 7 comments

Here’s what I think is a pretty good idea, as first reported by Cranky Flyer:

Virgin America is going to begin testing (at some airports) a new boarding plan that would allow passengers without bags to get on the plane first.

Makes sense, doesn’t it? After all, these won’t be the folks jockeying for bin space – they’ll just move on in and sit down – and then, let the jockeying begin.

What those innovative Virginites are trying to do, it seems, is to create a faster boarding process.

And it might also be a reward, I suppose, for those who pay to check a bag. Hey, why not? And, presumably one will still be allowed a “personal item” to carry on board – as I see it, this process will only truly work if folks’ personal items do not go in the overhead bin.

Just thinking out loud here – and what do you think?

Hat tip to Jaunted.
