United Bars Man from First Class Because of His Track Suit

Beware the fashion police!

According to Washington, DC news station WTTG, a man named Armando Alvarez was flying from Dulles to Connecticut last week, and used his miles to upgrade to first class.

When the agent at the United gate called his name, he walked up to receive his upgrade – only to receive a surprise instead. He was told he was dressed too casually – his track suit didn’t make the grade!

“I was humiliated and embarrassed,” said Alvarez, who just happens to be a vice president with the big electronic firm, Best Buy. He continued his journey in coach – apparently, his attire was deemed acceptable there.

As you might imagine, United recognized a potential PR disaster when it saw one; the TV report said the airline quickly “identified the gate agent and he is a contract employee who works for Air Wisconsin.” A spokesman for United said they are investigating, and added they have NO dress code, beyond “no barefeet” and passengers must be clothed.

Is anyone else reminded of the young woman who was nearly thrown off a Southwest flight for wearing a mini-skirt?

Finally, a voice of reason! Sportswear belongs at the gym and on the tennis court, not on a plane.

    Jason,
I kind of agree, but on really long flights, there is something to be said for comfort!
    Thanks for writing,
    Rick
