List of WiFi Airlines and Planes – and Prices, Too

November 23, 2009 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airline News,List | 3 comments

Sick and tired of trying to figure out which planes on which airlines have WiFi?

Problem solved. Just check out this definitive list from ABCNews.com: it names names – airlines and specific aircraft – and tells you what it costs, too.

As I reported earlier, so far only AirTran and Virgin America are completely WiFi-ed. There is a difference between them, though – some sites deemed “inappropriate” are blocked on AirTran, but you can go anywhere you want with Virgin America’s service (but please! – be respectful of your seatmates).

Golf in Orlando: Great Deals to “Best Golfing in North America”

November 23, 2009 | Posted in: Deals,Favorites,Sports | 0 comments

Golf lovers: Orlando has just been voted “North American Golf Destination” for 2010 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.

The award was in part for quality of Orlando’s golf and its service to players, but it might as well be for quantity, as well: the Florida resort town boasts 177 golf courses – plus, it’s host to more professional tour competitions than any other city.

Deals to Orlando? FareCompare’s Deal Finder has them: I see cheap flights in January from NY to Orlando for as little as $202 roundtrip – and what’s this? I see cheap flights from Chicago to Orlando for the even lower price of $187 roundtrip.

Hmm…was just thinking. A trip like this sure would make a nice holiday gift…

Odds of Getting Bumped from a Flight: Best and Worst Airlines

November 20, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Ask Rick,Passengers | 0 comments

The odds you could be bumped from a flight? In a word: slim.

Still, “getting bumped” happens to thousand every year, and you can read all about your “bumping chances” on specific airlines at a fascinating website called the Book of Odds – its tagline is, “the odds of everyday life” (and it includes everything from the odds you’ll date a supermodel to the odds of having a golf cart accident).

Anyway, back to bumping – according the site, the odds of a passenger being bumped from a flight both voluntarily and involuntarily are about 1 in 872. Chances of being bumped against your will are about 1 in 10,040.

Top 4 airlines where you are least likely to be involuntarily bumped: JetBlue, Hawaiian, AirTran and Alaska.

Top 4 airlines where you are more likely to be involuntarily bumped: Comair, Pinnacle, Atlantic Southeast and American Eagle.

“Peak Travel Day” Surcharge – Fee or Airline Survival Instinct?

November 20, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News,Pricing Activity | 0 comments

It’s been a rough couple of years for the airlines – what with the fuel crisis that sent prices into the stratosphere (well, to about $140 a barrel, back in July of 2008) – and then, the economy had its dramatic meltdown.

And people weren’t flying.

Which is why prices were exceedingly cheap this summer – in fact, they’re still pretty good, even during the holiday season -and that’s good for us, but not so good for the airlines.

Hence, the surcharges (always wanted to use “hence” in a sentence).

Annoying aren’t they? But, I kind of doubt they’d be much of an issue if we passengers hadn’t been so “primed” for extra costs – which we have been since the advent of the first checked-bag fee. In any event, always good to know the total price of a ticket.

And toward that end, I’ve created some new charts so you can see specific surcharge dates (and the airlines, and the prices). Notice that these dates continue throughout the spring, with a heavy concentration on Spring Break.

See the “Peak Travel Day” Surcharge Charts here.

Black Friday: Don’t Shop for Electronics, Adopt a Pet Instead

November 20, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Holiday Travel,Multimedia,Pets | 4 comments

The people at the Best Friends Animal Society say, forget Black Friday shopping — instead, come pick up a cat (or maybe a dog) this coming Nov. 26th and 27th (Thanksgiving Day, and the day after). There is an adoption fee.

The society, based in Kanab, Utah, has teamed with Pet Airways – the only all-pet airline – to find homes for 26 cats, and there may be some “extra pets” on the flight, including (maybe) some dogs.

Pet Airways will make the pick-up in Kanab on Thanksgiving Day, and over the course of the next 48 hours, will drop off animals in Denver, Omaha, Chicago, Baltimore/DC and New York (Long Island). If you want one of these pets, be sure and fill out an application first (due this coming Monday, Nov. 23).

And just to show you the kind of animals sheltered at Best Friends (and, because my editor couldn’t resist), take a look at these cute puppies:

EDITOR’S NOTE: Distressingly, not everyone can see the “puppy video” – if you can’t, please click here to view – trust me, it’s worth it.

What’s the Weirdest Place You’ve Seen an Airline Ad?

November 19, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Flight Attendants,Passengers | 0 comments

I was thinking about the weirdest place I’ve seen an airline ad – while perusing an LA Times story on AirTran’s plan to put ads on the backs of seats – actually, on the undersides of the tray tables.

“Hah!” I can hear you say, “I’ll pull the tray table down and make it disappear.” That won’t always work – US Airways has been known to slap ads on top of the trays. You want to escape the ads, so you grab a book from the overhead bin, and – if this is Spirit, beware the bin ads.

And don’t bother calling a flight attendant to complain – Spirit crews once had to wear aprons adorned with alcohol ads.

Hang on – you haven’t yet read about those bald heads and the magical pizza ads yet, so keep reading… What’s the Weirdest Place You’ve Seen an Airline Ad?

US Airways New 5% Surcharge: Other Airlines NOT Matching

November 19, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Pricing Activity,US Airways | 6 comments

At least, the other airlines aren’t matching – yet.

Maybe they’re waiting to see how much bad publicity – if any – will result from the move by US Airways to add a 5% surcharge to all its flights, beginning May 8.

It may be that the new surcharge is accepted – after all, we accepted (grudgingly) bag fees. On the other hand, US Airways did have to drop their charges for soft drinks and water after running into a buzz saw of passenger resentment.

And this 5% surcharge could sting a lot more than any $2 Coke. It’s like another bag fee, when you consider that 5% of a $300 ticket is 15-bucks.

Here’s where I have trouble – US Airways (in Philly.com) says the surcharge “will protect the airline in case fuel prices or other costs increase (my italics)” That’s an interesting way to do business: suppose your grocer slapped a 5% surcharge on a quart of milk in case the cost of the cows’ alfalfa goes up? Yeah, me too.
