One Northwest “Laptop Pilot” Blames the Other in Overshoot

You remember those two Northwest Airlines pilots who overshot their Minneapolis destination by about 150 miles – because they were on their personal laptops? Of course you do – gosh knows we laughed about it often enough.

The pilots, though, haven’t been laughing – not since they lost their licenses. And now at least one appears to be turning on the other.

According to the Wall St. Journal, co-pilot Richard Cole said he deserves “a lesser punishment” than Capt. Timothy Cheney, because he “reasonably relied on the performance” of Cheney, since for one thing, Cheney was in control of the aircraft. By the way, Cheney has apparently made no specific criticisms of Cole.

Will playing the “blame game” help? At this point, I’m sure no one knows – but pilots have gotten their licenses back after some tough situations – and in this case, as the WSJ notes, “Denver-area controllers, who were changing shifts at the time, effectively lost track of the plane’s status for roughly the first 20 or so minutes of its radio silence.” Maybe that will be seen as a mitigating circumstance for both pilots.
