Expect More Security Measures in Wake of Incident on Northwest Flight

December 25, 2009 | Posted in: News,Northwest | 5 comments

According to CNN, the White House is calling an incident aboard a Northwest flight from Amsterdam to Detroit today, an “attempted terrorist attack”.

The suspect was quickly subdued after he ignited what was believed to have been a small explosive device as the plane prepared to land in Detroit. Details are still sketchy, but the plane landed safely and the suspect is in custody. The Detroit Free Press quoted a man aboard this flight as saying people ran out of their seats to tackle the suspect — and he added, the way his fellow passengers responded “made me proud to be an American.”

What this means for air travelers: The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying that passengers “may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the traveling public on domestic and international flights.”

In other words, give yourself extra time: extra time to get to the airport, and extra time to go through security.

Glad Tidings to You…

Best of Air Travel for 2009 or What Went Right This Year

Best of 2009 Air Travel
I know travelers have a lot of complaints about the airline industry, and I know a lot of those complaints are warranted. However, as the year comes to a close, I figured I would spread a little bit of holiday cheer and recap some of the good things that happened in the air travel industry this year.

We’ve seen cheap flights, Capt. Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, some bold moves by DOT leadership, and more. We’ve even seen some airline fee drops (I know you’d like to see them disappear altogether, but at least it’s something). Take a look at my ABCNews.com column The Best of Air Travel in 2009 for more highlights from the past year. Of course, I did throw some of the blunders in there, too. I just couldn’t help myself, I guess.

Bad Weather + Romance = Another Airport Wedding!

December 23, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Uncategorized | 0 comments

airport wedding romanceLove is in the air at airports across the country this week. We’ve already had the Corpus Christi airport wedding, and now we have the Tampa airport wedding. This one was helped along the way by some bad weather in Baltimore:

“My sister Shawna was supposed to get married Sunday and the Groom Cody, who is in the Army away for training, was snowed in at Baltimore. After hours and hours of trying to get him home, we realized he was not going to make it to the ceremony. My sister decided we should take the ceremony to him! We loaded up several vehicles with friends, family, and the minister, drove from Orlando to Tampa! When he walked into the terminal just after midnight, she was waiting for him holding a sign with his name on it. After a short embrace, we set everything up and had the ceremony right there in front of all the passengers from his flight and others that were stranded in the airport!” (from CNN iReport)

Score another one for romance.

Bad Weather Returns: Find Airlines’ Winter Weather Policies

Holiday Travel Tips
With bad winter weather “targeting” the Midwest, parts of the East Coast, and some European destinations, airlines are coping with more delays and cancellations, while they try to regroup from the delays and cancellations caused by the major East Coast snow storm this past weekend.

A number of airlines have altered their policies for travelers facing bad weather issues over the holidays, allowing for date changes without penalties for flights to specific destinations. I put together a short list of links to some of the airlines’ winter weather policies and advisories. If you’re traveling over the next few days, monitor your flight status and contact your airline.

“Balloon Boy” Parents Get $42,000 Bill for Rescue Efforts

balloon boy parents $42,000 bill rescue efforts

This may dim the holiday festivities for the Heene family somewhat.

The Heenes, you may recall, are the parents of 6-year old Falcon, who will be known for the ages as Balloon Boy — thanks to the scam perpetrated by his dad Richard, in an effort to achieve reality-TV show fame — or at least, that’s how authorities saw it.

Those authorities helped mount a rescue effort for Falcon, who was believed to be trapped in a runaway weather balloon — an effort that involved local law enforcement, the National Guard and even the FAA. The $42,000 bill covers at least part of those costs.

A lawyer for Richard Heene indicated they won’t pay the bill until they see “the receipts.”

As website TMZ slyly notes, “We’re pretty sure there’s no shortage of TV footage.”
