Airport Wedding — Who Says Romance is Dead?

December 22, 2009 | Posted in: Frequent Flyer,Passengers | 0 comments

airport wedding romance

An engaged couple were about to end their long distance relationship — by getting married (she lives in Corpus Christi, he lives in Toledo).

The only question was, where to do it? They had the license, but no venue.

William Acosta, the groom-to-be suggested offhandedly that, since they spent so much time saying hello and goodbye in Ohio and Texas, why not just get married at the airport? If he meant it as a joke, too bad — his fiancee Robyn Moore decided to surprise him by doing just what he said.

So when the groom-to-be arrived at Corpus Christi International yesterday, he was greeted by Moore, wearing a fetching white gown; a justice of the peace; assorted friends and well wishers — and of course, a couple of cameras (you can see the video here).

Turns out Acosta was delighted with the set-up (despite being attired in jeans and a sweater), and they were promptly married. Best wishes!

Oh, and if any of you are among the lucky few to get the freebies, tell us about it.

DOT: Planes Must Unload Passengers After 3 Hours on Tarmac

DOT planes 3 hours tarmac

Breaking consumer airline news: U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood puts a 3-hour limit for aircraft sitting on the tarmac before passengers must be allowed to deplane.

Now there are some exceptions — this is from the DOT’s press release:

“The new rule prohibits U.S. airlines operating domestic flights from permitting an aircraft to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours without deplaning passengers, with exceptions allowed only for safety or security or if air traffic control advises the pilot in command that returning to the terminal would disrupt airport operations.”

What’s it mean? The end of “trapped on the tarmac” nightmares, it sounds like. Basically, Sec. LaHood apparently is not waiting around for a passenger rights bill from Congress — he’s being proactive — and I like it.

“Airline passengers have rights, and these new rules will require airlines to live up to their obligation to treat their customers fairly.” Secretary Raymond LaHood, 12-21-09

This will go into effect in a few months. Oh, and there’s a lot more to it — including prohibiting “airlines from scheduling chronically delayed flights” — so keep reading.

Did You Survive the Great Snow Storm? Airline Twitter Helped

snow storm airline twitter

Yep, it was bad over the weekend– particularly in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area — well, in many many cites throughout the northeast.

If you were caught up in it, and are “twiterate” — okay, my word for Twitter-savvy — you were able to get some info from airline tweets (Jaunted noted that United and Virgin America did an especially good job at keeping folks updated via tweets).

And you probably know that many/most airlines are waiving their “change fees” (how could they not?).

Here’s hoping everyone is home for the holidays, and soon. Safe travels.

If Your Flight is Cancelled, Make Contact with Your Airline ASAP

December 19, 2009 | Posted in: Delays,Storms,Tips and Tricks,Weather | 1 comment

If you live in the East, I don’t have to tell you the weather is nasty and roads are closed and flights are cancelled.

If you were supposed to fly today, and not sure what’s happening with your flight, the most important thing you can do is to make contact with your airline.

If you are home, get on the airline’s website, AND call.

If you are at the airport, get in line for a gate agent, AND call.

Speed is of the essence: The first to make contact will likely be the first to get the few “next available seats”. Also, notice that I said, if you’re at the airport, make contact with the gate agent. Over the years, it has been my experience that they are better at juggling and more “in the know” than their counterparts at the airline ticketing counters, possibly because of their sheer proximity to the action.

Another important tip: If the best you can get is a flight out the next day, and the airline rep tells you to be there 2 hours before departure, be there. Don’t assume you can show up a mere hour before; your seat on that flight may be gone.

Southwest Airlines: “Never Say Never” to Merger

December 18, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Southwest | 0 comments

Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly spoke at a Wings Club event in New York, and he made it clear that the Dallas-based airline is interested in further growth. Kelly even said he wouldn’t rule out the idea of a merger without tipping his hand in any way, shape, or form: “I would never say never, and you know I won’t give you a straight answer on that…” (from The Chicago Tribune)

Southwest Airlines did attempt to acquire Frontier Airlines earlier this year, but ultimately Frontier was purchased by Republic Airways Holdings Inc.

Kelly suggested that Southwest will always look for growth opportunities, but for the time being he seems content to play things conservatively, so for now it seems the merger focus will swing back to the legacy carriers.

The “Happiest” States in America: Have You Been There?

Happiest States in America
Researchers from the University of Warwick in England and Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. have released their list of the Happiest States in America.

Their study “compared the happiness ranking with studies that rated states on a variety of criteria ranging from availability of public land to commuting time to local taxes.” (from Huffington Post)

I’m sure a lot of people will disagree with the list, but I wanted to pass it along. If you’ve traveled to the top states let us know if you found them as happy as the report. I’ve listed the Top 10 below. You can find the rankings of all 50 states (and Washington, DC) at the Associated Press. The “Happiest” States in America: Have You Been There?
