Bottle in Checked Bag Tests Positive for Explosive, Shuts Down Bakersfield Airport

January 5, 2010 | Posted in: News

LATEST UPDATE: The substance in question was honey. Yes, honey. No one is sure why it tested positive for explosives.

UPDATE: Bakersfield’s KGET TV reports the substance is “not a bomb” and that this is being treated as a “hazmat issue”.

EARLIER: Ongoing situation at California’s Bakersfield Airport…

According to the Bakersfield Californian, a bottle that was checked into some luggage has tested positive for the explosive TNT. The bag’s owner has been detained for questioning — and, as of this writing, the small airport has been shut down. The Los Angeles Times reports a SkyWest flight heading into Bakersfield from San Francisco was diverted to LA.

The man who owned the baggage has been detained for questioning. The TSA workers were rushed to the hospital as a precaution (and I believe have since been released).

It is always possible the tests of the bottle’s contents resulted in a “false positive” but the sheriff says, he and his colleague are understandably treating it like the real thing.

We’ll keep you updated.
