Seems like this would be old news other than it’s more specific than what I have seen. There are towns who already charge per can of trash that you dispose of rather than a flat rate. Makes sense when you think about it, prevents you from CREATING so much trash resulting (hopefully) in more recycling, or you simply FIND alternative ways of disposing of it…
Justin,
In all honesty, if the story had said, “trash can fees” it never would have seen the light of day on my blog. I just loved seeing “bag fees” in any context outside of the airlines.
Plus, my editor has a soft spot for Cape Cod.

I can see problems with this one.People dropping there trash up the street or next store in the middle of the night.Others just taking it all behind a shopping center. This is a bad Idea they just need to raise the fees.

In my hometown, they have, for several years, charged “per bag” for garbage. You have to buy special “city bags” that are turquoise, to distinguish them from other garbage bags, and those are the only bags the trash pickup company will pick up. I believe the charge is $1.75 per bag. We also have free curb side recycling pickup to encourage minimum use of the “city bags”.
Sharon,
And such a bargain of a fee; sure beats the airlines’.

Rick
Yikes! My bag fee is $5.55, but it’s still cheaper than using monthly can service.
Lee,
And, it’s still cheaper than the airlines’ fees!
Rick
In our community, we recycle plastics, paper and aluminum. We have had garbage removal on a pay per container basis for years, which causes one to think twice about recycling, as is save money. I think our fees are now about $2.50 for a garbage can full of trash and no cost for recycled material pickup. We can also have pay per month for twice a week pickup, but we sometimes only have less than a full can of garbage in a week, but two containers of recycle materials. thank goodness for a garbage disposer in our sink.
