How to Calm Screaming Kids on Planes — Tips from an Expert

screaming kids planes tips expert

Some of my readers are just amazing. Like “Steve M” — a businessman and the father of five young children (or as he puts it, “my wife is a saint”).

Steve recently commented on a Dec. 4th post of mine, about what you can do about kids screaming on planes and he offered up some of his own ideas. I thought they were good enough to share. Here’s Steve’s story:

“I travel for business about 60-75% of my life and have seen tons of kids on flights. And I fly in and out of John Wayne Airport (near Anaheim, California) — also known as “Airport Disney”. Typically what I have noticed is that more often than not, the parents make the kids nervous.”

“While there are some that just let their kids run free, they seem to be the minority. It is the super-nervous single mom that seems to have super panicky kids that scream and cry. I have taken to just talking to these parents for a few minutes, telling the mom to relax and play with the kid for a few minutes.”

Keep reading for his ideas on how ordinary passengers spread some calm — and cheer.

delays dc reagan airport power outage

An hour long power outage at Washington Reagan Airport in the nation’s capital is over now, but flights were halted for a time and now, delays linger.

FlightStats notes that delays have moved into what they call the “excessive” category, so if you’re traveling to or from there today, you might want to check with your airline.

Elsewhere, some delays in San Francisco at the moment, due to fog.

The Last Days of Northwest Airlines

last days northwest airlines

The final countdown to say goodbye to Northwest Airlines is underway. I know, its merger with Delta seems to have been a long time in the making (since Oct. 2008, anyway), but it’s finally coming to an end, as a new “super Delta” finally emerges.

Maybe you’ve been noticing things like 80% of Northwest planes are now painted in Delta colors — the rest will change by this Spring.

And in the coming weeks (according to the Wall St. Journal), look for Delta and Northwest pilots to share cockpits for the first time — you might not notice, though: both already wear Delta uniforms. And by the end of March, the two airlines’ ticketing systems will be replaced by a single entity.

Oh, and as you might have expected, Delta’s soft drink of choice prevails over Northwest’s Pepsi — since October, it’s been Coke or Diet Coke.

list 14 countries guarantee extra tsa screening

Beginning yesterday, the TSA said it would begin stepping up security for any and all passengers headed to the U.S. traveling from or through countries it considers “state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest”.

Per CNN, here is the list:

Cuba*
Iran*
Sudan*
Syria*
Afghanistan
Algeria
Iraq
Lebanon
Libya
Nigeria
Pakistan
Saudi Arabia
Somalia
Yemen

*State sponsors of terrorism, according to CNN sources.

Understand, though, that you could also be put through the as yet unknown “enhanced security measures” if you traveling through other countries — for other reasons. Be on your toes.

Domestic Airlines Ring in the New Year with an Airfare Hike

airfare hike new year

Just so you know:

Wednesday evening (Dec. 30) the FareCompare.com proprietary airfare tracking system detected unusual system-wide airfare hike activity initiated by United Airlines.

Over 15,000 United city-pairs were increased by $6 and $10 roundtrip ($3 and $5 each way). The increase covered the bulk of United’s domestic route system — mainly at the $6 roundtrip level.

On New Year’s Eve, the remaining legacy airlines began to match including American, Delta/Northwest, US Airways, Continental and Alaska.

Please note: The hike did not have any effect on a variety of airfare sales in the domestic system for travel through early March. Legacy airlines also tiptoed around overlapping low cost airline routes (Southwest, JetBlue, AirTran) as the group has yet to participate in the hike.

This increase represents the 4th successful hike of 2009 compared to fifteen in 2008 and seventeen in 2007 — all since mid 2009.
