Women in UK Refuse Body Scanning, are Denied Boarding

March 5, 2010 | Posted in: DOT,Passengers,Security

UK body scan

Two women at the airport in Manchester, England declined to undergo the full body scan – you know, the somewhat controversial security imaging machine – with the result that neither one was allowed to fly.

According to reports, one refused on religious grounds, the other “cited health grounds.”

In the U.S., you have the right to refuse the body scan – although if you do, you will be subjected to a full pat-down.

I am concerned/curious about the level of radiation involved in these scans…about the monitering of machines to be sure that they are correctly calibrated. The fact that this women objected on a “Health basis” leads me to think that these are not benign scans. How much radiation is used compared to say…dental x-rays or chest x-rays? Sheila

    Sheila,

Please see what the TSA has written about this on their website at http://www.tsa.gov/approach/tech/imaging_technology.shtm

    Hope this helps,
    Rick

I’m curious: does full body pat down include checking for items in underwear? If not, then I don’t understand why scans aren’t enforced. Thanks
