Virgin America Moves Cheap Flights from Orange Co. to Orlando

Another “it was fun while it lasted” post.

Just about a year ago, Virgin America made a splashy entry at John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, California (beautiful girls! beautiful Branson!), and now – it’s pulling out.

No real reason was given. According to the press release, “Despite our relatively strong performance at SNA, given our new fleet plan and network prospects, we’ve made the decision to focus on the immediate long-haul opportunities…”

One of those new opportunities is Orlando – Virgin America will begin flights there in August. And to kick it off, they have some really good deals, which we go into in more detail on over at FareCompare’s Deals Blog.

But, back in Orange County, there’s some disappointment:

Well that sucks. I really enjoyed my flight to SF last August. I felt like I was in at a strip club with their purple mood lighting.” — comment in Orange County Register, 3-18-10

    Rick,
with all the economic turmoil in Greece and Europe in general, what do you predict will happen to flight prices? Also, will those be safe places to be this summer? If i but tickets to go, am i guaranteed the airlines won’t strike? Will they rely on tourism more?

Also, do you have a form to submit travel questions? i think that would be great to take questions from your audience.

    Rick,

What’s wrong with purple lighting if you have great service and tv for the whole flight? Just flew Virgin America from SFO to BOS and loved it!

    Stephen,

Don’t get me wrong – I think Virgin America’s moodlighting is very cool. And everyone I know loves it.

    Thanks for writing,

    Carol,

I’ll bet plenty of others are glad, too – that airline has a lot of fervent fans.

    Best,

Prices for Europe this year (compared to last) have been and are likely to continue to be much higher and stay that way as the economy continues to creep forward.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be some discounting; it will however be in much shorter purchasing windows.

On the issue of safety, I wouldn’t be overly concerned (other than keeping an eye out for rallies/demonstrations at various hot spots – avoid if possible). I have already been to Europe twice this year and plan a couple more trips.

On the issue of strikes, both British Airways and Lufthansa are having issues so keep that in mind, but typically they try to insure long-haul flights continue (‘though there are no guarantees).

Bottom line: prices are firm (look for $1000+ roundtrip for summer); sales are few and far between so sign up for our alerts and do keep an eye on the geopolitical situation of your destination (see Travel.State.Gov) and the goings on your selected carrier.

    Rick
