Twitter – Who Needs It? You Might – for Cheap Flights

March 30, 2010 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News,Deals,Twitter | 6 comments

twitter cheap flights

I’ve gotten into this whole social media thing, and I enjoy it – but I know a lot of you don’t have much time or feel you don’t have the expertise – or maybe you’re thinking, I don’t want to go on Twitter and tell everyone what I’m up to every minute of the day.

Relax – you don’t have to. But there are other good reasons to learn Twitter: it opens up a new channel of communication – that can help you get cheaper flights – and more.

For example, once you get on Twitter, you can do the following:

  • Get alerted to real-time deals from FareCompare – the ones you want, from your home airport
  • Follow important announcement from your airline about weather delays and more
  • Send direct messages to your airline – and yes, a tweet will often get their attention, and an answer (airlines love “social media”)

My editor says  it only took her about an hour to “get” Twitter. As she explained it, “I’m a total idiot when it comes to anything the least bit ‘techy’, so I just hired a college kid who lived down the street to teach me the basics. Amazingly enough, it was really easy.”

Did you know that you don’t even have to have a special phone to access twitter? Your computer will work just fine (although you’re not so mobile). Give it a try – and once you do, follow me on Twitter – and see what I’ve got cooking.

Hate Airline Fees? You Won’t Like Hotel Fees Much, Either

airline fees hotel fees

If you’re sick of airline fees, pack a carryon. And if you’re sick of hotel fees – what, you didn’t know hotels have them?

Well they do, according to the Los Angeles Times, which cites Bjorn Hanson, a “hospitality expert” from NYU who says  hotels are increasingly charging for what had been free services, and, coming up with diabolical new fees (okay, so “diabolical” is my word).

An example they give is a “restocking fee” in case you take a $2.50 soda out of the mini-bar; restocking it might be another $5.95.  They might even charge you to watch your bags for a few hours after you check out. Hmm.

One thing you can say about the airlines: they tell you what you’ll pay for that bag you want to check, up front. Prof. Hanson says you may not know about these hotel fees, until you get the final bill.

Sorry, no hotels are named in the article – but to be on the safe side, just be sure you’re really thirsty before you grab that Diet Coke.

Passenger Traffic Down – but Which Airlines had the Most?

March 29, 2010 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News,DOT,Passengers,Southwest | 1 comment

passenger traffic airlines

No surprise here: Last year, the number of airline passengers dropped. The decline from 2008 to 2009 has been pegged at 5.3% – and that includes passengers on domestic flights, and international routes to and from the U.S.

All told, there were just a hair under 770 million passengers last year, according to the Dept. of Transportations statistics.

So which airlines carried the most passengers in 2009? No real surprise here either: for the third consecutive year in a row, Southwest carried more passengers than any other U.S. airline. The airline with the most international passengers (again, to and from the U.S.) was American Airlines – for the 20th year in a row.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a Hail Storm – JetBlue Hit Hard at JFK

bird plane hail jetblue

At first, the pilots of the JetBlue flight heading for Long Beach figured they’d hit a flock of birds as they took off from JFK.

Birds can be dangerous – after all, that’s what forced Capt. Sully into the “Miracle on the Hudson” landing.

Turned out it wasn’t birds, though. It was hail – icy hard rocks that pelted the plane. According to the Los Angeles Times, it’s not clear if the hail did any “significant damage” – but hail can be destructive.

Just last week in Perth, Australia – the airport there was “thrown into chaos” after part of the roof collapsed at the Qantas terminal – thanks to heavy rain and hail.

Meanwhile, those JetBlue passengers were put on another plane and arrived in Long Beach just a couple of hours late.

Never Dull at LAX Airport: Hare Krishnas, Paparazzi Fights

lax airport hare krishnas paparazzi fights

Seems like there’s always something doing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Often it has to do with photographers getting into fights over celebrities.

And it happened again Friday night, as the paparazzi duked it out for prime position curbside for the arrival of British singer – Pixie Lott. No, I never heard of her either, but I’m sure I’m in the wrong demographic. One cameraman was sent to the hospital, another sent to jail (until he bailed out).

As for the Hare Krishnas – the California Supreme Court affirmed a ban on the Krishnas and other groups from soliciting donations at LAX .

Apparently, LAX passengers have complained of being hassled by money-seeking groups over the years, and according to USA Today, in the past 12-months alone, police there have made 84 arrests for “aggressive soliciting”.

Seems like the end of a saffron-colored era.

New TSA Nominee Out; Favored Israeli Airport Security Model

TSA Israel airport security

The president’s second nominee for the head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) suddenly withdrew his nomination last night – because of questions about his background as a defense contractor.

The retired army major general, Robert Harding, said in a statement that questions about his past work as a defense contractor – including concerns about finances regarding one government contract – would be a distraction. The first nominee for the post withdrew early this year after acknowledging he gave inconsistent answers to questions about his work with the Los Angeles police.

Now, it’s back to square one – which I know will disappoint some of my readers, who liked nominee Harding’s ideas on moving closer to the “Israeli model” for airline and airport security.

Okay, it is so on.

Southwest and AirTran are dueling it out for your business and the weapon of choice is video (and our thanks to Terry Maxon at the Airline Biz blog for the heads-up).

First, Southwest touts its free bags in “Battle Cry” (:35).

Then, AirTran touts its assigned seating in “Skip the Stampede” (:53).

And the winner is…? You tell me.

Fans Rally to Save Frontier Airlines Tail Animals

March 26, 2010 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News,Favorites,News | 6 comments

frontier airlines tail animals

Pictured, left, is Frontier Airlines’ spokesmodel Larry the Lynx. Handsome devil, isn’t he?

Anyway, Larry, Grizwald the Bear, Jack the Rabbit and the other wildlife creatures that adorn Frontier’s aircraft could be in danger – and employees and fans rallied today in downtown Denver to try and save them.

You see, ever since Republic Airways bought Frontier – and its now sister-carrier, Midwest – there’s been talk about re-branding both airlines into one new entity, with an all new name, logo, and all the rest. And that means, bye-bye Larry and his colleagues.

So the rallying cried of the day, says the Denver Post, has been “Save Our Animals, Save Our Tails”. Will they soon be saying, “Save the Cookies” in Milwaukee?

If you’re interested in “meeting” Frontier’s animals, bio’s are posted on their website like this one, for Grizwald the bear.

Grizwald the Bear

  • Weight: More than it should be
  • Quote: “You gonna eat that?”
  • Favorite Pastimes: Shaking his groove thing, hibernating, belly rubs
  • Pet Peeves: Beehives, bear-skin rugs, delays on the runway

(Quit groaning, I didn’t write it)
