No Cheap Flight Info Here, Just Me in a Hot Tub Time Machine

cheap flight hot tub time machine

I have to say I was a little taken aback when ABC asked me to come up with a few words on where’d I’d go in a hot tub time machine – until I remembered that the movie, “Hot Tub Time Machine” was coming out today.

Well in that case…I decided to visit Noah’s Ark. And since we’re in the midst of March Madness, my thoughts turned to basketball – and I figured who better to accompany me than one of the all time greats of NBA coaching, the late and lamented Red Auerbach.

So here’s my contribution to this ABCNews.com story:

So I’m in my hot tub time machine with my buddy Red Auerbach (hey, this is my fantasy). Naturally, we are smoking cigars. And schmoozing.

“Where to, Red?” I ask.

“Let’s make a fast break for Eastern Turkey,” says Red. “Mount Ararat.”

“Ah, Noah’s Ark, good choice.”

“Yeah, I want to see if I can get me two Larry Birds,” says Red, idly flicking an ash.

“How I Stupidly Spent $500 on an Un-Cheap Plane Ticket”

March 25, 2010 | Posted in: Airfare News,Tips and Tricks | 3 comments

cheap plane ticket

Another first-person story from an anonymous traveler, who paid too much. “I should have known better,” she admits – but, we’re all human, we all make errors. Learn from hers!

Yes, even before I saw Rick’s post on “Top 5 Tips to Get the Cheapest Airfare this Spring and Summer” – I knew that procrastinating was stupid. Really I did. Unfortunately, nobody put a gun to my head and said “get your ticket today”, and so I let it slide.

Big mistake.

Make that, two big mistakes. For some reason, I decided that this weekend event I had to attend in the Midwest required me to fly out on a Friday and return on Sunday. I could’ve gotten an extra day or two off, but nooooo. It didn’t occur to me to ask.

With the result that I made reservations on the two most expensive days to fly (well, they usually are) plus, I waited until just a couple of weeks before departure to book the tickets. Idiot. Somehow I forgot that there are fewer flights these days, and that other people might possibly want to travel when I want to travel.

Anyway, I’ve flown this route numerous times for $300 (and occasionally for a lot less). But I paid $500. On Southwest. You should have seen what the other airlines were asking.

I better have a real good time on this trip, that’s all I can say. Oh, I can also say, read Rick’s tips – and follow them. Seriously.

Europe-U.S. Open Skies Pact to Expand, No Imminent Changes

open skies europe u.s.

The three year old “Open Skies” agreement between the European Union and the U.S. that strips away regulations that allow airlines to “operate more freely across the Atlantic” as the New York Times notes, will be expanding.

Congress could still put up roadblocks on this issue: the agreement calls for steps that would remove  “constraints on foreign investment and market access that have been holding back the development of the most important aviation market.”

I like Jaunted’s comment: “Richard Branson, we’re looking in your direction.”

Also, this latest agreement would give Europe’s airlines new opportunities to fly between the U.S. and “third countries” in the future. And ultimately, it could mean prices come down. But note my use of the word, “could”. In this financial environment, anything’s possible, and I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

Flight Attendant on Airline Colleagues: “Burnt out, annoying”

flight attenants

Somebody pointed me to the Vulture blog where a United flight attendant reviewed the Virgin America reality show Fly Girls.

Or they said it was an actual flight attendant – this man was anonymous after all – but there’s no reason to believe otherwise. Anyway, he liked Fly Girls (other reviews I’ve seen are lukewarm), but this “Fly Guy” added that some of it “wasn’t realistic”:

“He also pointed out that not all flight attendants are so, er, attractive. ‘Virgin is maybe an exception, but at United, we have this super professional attitude, and so we have some older ladies, and a lot of them are burnt out and annoying,’ he said.” - Vulture blog, 3-25-10

You better believe I have a few observations to make about the above – so, keep reading…

Airlines: “We Don’t Lose Nearly as Many Bags as We Used To”

March 25, 2010 | Posted in: Airline News,Ask Rick | 0 comments

airlines lose bags

Good news: according to SITA, a Geneva-based airline/airport communications and computer services group, the world’s airlines lost close to 24% fewer bags in 2009, than they did in 2008.

Another way to put it (thanks, Reuters) is that just 11 passengers out of 1,000 lost their bags last year (and the vast majority of those “lost bags” were eventually found and returned to their owners).

Of course, part of the reason fewer bags were lost is because fewer bags were checked: after all, there were 60 million fewer airline passengers worldwide in 2009 compared to the previous year, but SITA’s baggage report says that doesn’t account for all the improvement – SITA’s CEO is quoted in the report saying:

Improvements in baggage handling systems and passengers checking in fewer bags to avoid extra fees have also contributed to the overall decline.” - Francesco Violante, SITA 3-25-10

If you want to know more about bag fees so you can avoid them, see FareCompare’s Bag Fee Chart – and dust off that carryon.

Harry Potter – Another Reason to Find Cheap Airfare to Orlando

March 25, 2010 | Posted in: Deals,Destinations,Travel Tips | 0 comments

harry potter cheap airfare orlando

Universal Orlando’s new theme park, “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” opens to the public June 18 and according to an ABC report I just read, it should be a winner.

From everything I’ve heard, the attention to detail is just amazing – the designers went to Scotland to consult with author J.K. Rowling every step of the way – and Potterheads will be able to “soar on Harry’s broomstick or quaff a butter beer in the Hog’s Head pub”.

Please see our related post over on our Deals Blog on finding the cheapest flights to Orlando.

Note to the kids out there: as fun as the park and the Harry Potter movies are, it is no substitute for reading these terrific books.

Letterman on Spring Break and Airline Insanity

letterman spring break airline

As you can see, there are no new airline fees to warn you about, and no bizarre passenger incidents to report (well, at the moment, anyway) – so, I decided to see what’s up with the late night comics.

And David Letterman has a funny new list: “Top Ten Signs You’re Having a Bad Spring Break”.

The signs include:

#10. Instead of Mexico, you’re spending a week at Texaco

#6. Health care bill didn’t pass in time for you to get arm reattached after shark attack

#4. Your hotel room is home to seven of the world’s 10 deadliest snakes

I think the folks in this next one could have benefited from reading my latest ABC column, The World’s Most Dangerous Countries:

#3. P.A. Announcement on the beach: “Take Cover. Enemy aircraft approaching”

And my favorite?

#1. Still stuck on runway from Spring Break ’09

See the entire list here.

Long Forgotten Pilot Dies – And Why We Should Remember Her

March 24, 2010 | Posted in: Pilots | 6 comments

pilot

You probably never heard of 98 year old Elinor Smith – and it’s a little late now, seeing as how her obituary has just been published in the Washington Post – but she is worth remembering.

For a lot of reasons:

  • Became a test pilot for Fairchild Aviation at age 19
  • Was voted by fellow pilots 1930′s female “pilot of the year” over Amelia Earhart
  • Was featured on a box of Wheaties (1934)

And she broke all kinds speed, endurance and altitude records.

But even better, she knew everybody – she successfully appealed to Orville Wright (then with the National Aeronautic Association) to become the youngest licensed pilot in the world at age 16; she was given a pep talk by Charles Lindbergh before successfully flying under New York’s Queensboro, Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges (on a dare); and she was friends with the one and only Amelia Earhart.

Smith retired when she got married back in 1933, raised four children and flew every now and then (she was in her late 80′s during her last flight) and was, unfairly I think, forgotten.

But perhaps that’s what happens if you are lucky enough to become an old lady – instead of disappearing in your prime.
