Volcano Ash Grounds Flights for Obama, World Leaders

April 17, 2010 | Posted in: Airline News,Europe,News,Travel Tips

volcano ash flights obama world leaders

Iceland’s volcano is still spewing ash - and still grounding flights to and from Europe.

How bad is it? Terrible. And it has now also prompted some world leaders – including the U.S. president – to cancel plans to attend Sunday’s funeral for Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who was killed in a plane crash in Russia last week.

In a statement released by the White House today, Pres. Obama was quoted as saying he’d spoken to Poland’s acting president, and added: “Michelle and I continue to have the Polish people in our thoughts and prayers, and will support them in any way I can as they recover from this terrible tragedy.”

Among those also canceling plans to attend the funeral are Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper, South Korean Prime Minister Chung Un-chan and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

Other European leaders say they may try – try – to make the trip by car.

I have a question but couldn’t find the anywhere to post it.

I’m currently an AS MVP, soon to be MVP gold, but i’m wondering if i should switch to Delta Skymiles. Most of my mileage is earned on Delta’s PDX-AMS flight. I have about 70k miles (before upgrades) of flying over the next 6 months and I want to maximize the value that i receive from these, including the ability to use miles globally, upgrades, etc…

Additionally, I’m moving to AMS for 3 years in a couple of months.

Would love to hear your POV on the preferred mileage plan in this scenario.

    many thanks
