Wet Dog Rescued in Air Makes Firefighter Famous

February 4, 2010 | Posted in: Airline News,Favorites,News,Pets,Storms | 2 comments

dog rescued air firefighter

Were you one of those folks riveted to the TV when a rather heroic Los Angeles firefighter rescued a dog from the raging LA River a few weeks back while dangling from a helicopter cable? (By the way, you rarely get to use the word “raging” in connection with the LA River, that’s for sure.)

The “heroism” comes in because the dog – Spikey – kept biting his rescuer, firefighter Joe St. Georges, who took it all in stride (“He’s cold, he’s scared. . . he does what a dog does”).

Since then, Joe and his team have gotten famous: Joe’s appeared on “Today” and “Ellen DeGeneres” where the audience went wild when it was learned the 50-year old man was single.

Meanwhile, Spikey’s doing real well too and has been reunited with his owners.

I know, I know, this one’s a bit of a stretch for an air travel blog but as my editor points out, “it does involve an aircraft” – and it’s a nice story to boot.

Claus’ German Sausage and Meats: Try the “blue bratwurst”. $4.55 per pound. Yes, blue brats.

New Orleans:

Gambino’s Bakery: Try the Saints King Cake with black and gold icing ($33.50) or the Saints Helmet cake ($95, feeds 30).

Cammander’s Palace: Now you know this game is serious; on Super Bowl Sunday, the Palace will be closed.

Palm Beach:

The Breakers: Try the Black and Blue Burger ($18), or the Crispy “Colt” Wings ($14), in the Seafood Bar.

Continental CEO: No Salary Until the Airline Makes Money

January 5, 2010 | Posted in: Airline News,Favorites | 1 comment

continental ceo no salary airline makes money

Normally, Continental CEO Jeffrey Smisek would be paid $730,000 in salary this year, notes the Wall St. Journal. But get this: Smisek says he won’t accept his salary — and that goes for his annual bonus, too — until the airline records a full-year net profit.

It’s a wonderful gesture in an industry that has seen so many low level employees forced to take pay cuts to keep their airlines flying (and not so low level — pilots and cabin crew have seen salaries slashed, as well).

Smisek wrote a letter to his employees about this, telling them he wasn’t asking anyone else to reduce their pay — he just wanted their help in “making Continental profitable again.” If nothing else, I can see how this will do good things for morale.

(Idle thought: I trust he consulted the missus before taking this drastic step…)

How to Calm Screaming Kids on Planes — Tips from an Expert

screaming kids planes tips expert

Some of my readers are just amazing. Like “Steve M” — a businessman and the father of five young children (or as he puts it, “my wife is a saint”).

Steve recently commented on a Dec. 4th post of mine, about what you can do about kids screaming on planes and he offered up some of his own ideas. I thought they were good enough to share. Here’s Steve’s story:

“I travel for business about 60-75% of my life and have seen tons of kids on flights. And I fly in and out of John Wayne Airport (near Anaheim, California) — also known as “Airport Disney”. Typically what I have noticed is that more often than not, the parents make the kids nervous.”

“While there are some that just let their kids run free, they seem to be the minority. It is the super-nervous single mom that seems to have super panicky kids that scream and cry. I have taken to just talking to these parents for a few minutes, telling the mom to relax and play with the kid for a few minutes.”

Keep reading for his ideas on how ordinary passengers spread some calm — and cheer.

Seven Top Weird Air Travel Stories of 2009 — with Updates

seven top weird air travel stories 2009 updates

These aren’t exactly the “top” air travel stories of the year — this list does not include actions by the Dept. of Transportation or the foiled would-be terrorist — but they are weird, and some made us laugh.

1. United Breaks Guitars — You don’t mess with mild-mannered singer/songwriter Dave Carroll and get away with it. After United Airlines’ baggage folks broke his guitar, Carroll got no help from the airline. Then he wrote a song/created a video about the incident which became a huge hit, and suddenly, United was Dave’s BFF.

UPDATE: The singer is doing well and about to release the third song in his “United Breaks Guitars” trilogy — and if you missed someone on your Christmas list, Dave now sells “United Breaks Guitars T-Shirts”, attractively priced at $19.95.

2. Chihuahua Airlift — Actress Katherine Heigl helped pay for a glut of Chihuahuas to be flown from crowded LA pounds to new homes in New Hampshire (don’t worry, the little yappers were outfitted with coats).

UPDATE: More of the little dogs have since been flown to new homes, plus, a Katrina-survivor Chihuahua is now starring in a new 2010 calendar that will donate money to Chihuahua rescues.

Keep reading for updates on the liquid soap-swilling passenger, the drunken pilot and more…
