Get Cheap Flights to Bowl Games (Game Tickets, Not so Cheap)

December 10, 2009 | Posted in: Deals,Sports | 0 comments

cheap tickets

Great news for you college football fanatics (and those that love them) – our new Bowl Game Flight Finder.

Want to see Ohio State face-off against Oregon in the Rose Bowl? We’ve got it covered with the best deals to Los Angeles – in fact, our Bowl Game Flight Finder features all the “bowl cities” – from your home airport!

Now the bad news is, when it comes to game tickets, you’re on your own. I notice that the official Tournament of Roses/Ticketmaster site seems to have nothing left – though I also notice one ticket broker has some seats in the end zone for about $300 apiece.

But sometimes, just being in the same city as your favorite team – say, in a cheery, uproarious sports bar – can be almost as good.

Spirit Cashes in on Tiger Woods with Tasteless Ad – New Low?

December 3, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Sports | 0 comments

Somebody said, take a look at the Spirit Airlines website, and I did – and saw a short, animated video ad of a tiger driving an SUV into a fire hydrant. This gem publicizes Spirit’s no doubt quickly-put-together “Eye of the Tiger” sale. It is an obvious reference to the beleaguered golfer.

Also on the same site, a somewhat more tasteful spot featuring a vampire touting the carrier’s new “Low Moon” sale, playing off the current hit Twilight film.

But it’s the “Tiger” ad that makes you gasp. A new low for Spirit?

Not really – not for those who remember the airline’s “Double-D’s” ad – or perhaps you recall their “MILF” ad (which their marketing team alleged referred to many islands, low fares). Then there was that “T & A” ad

Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza once explained all this by simply saying, “We’re a small airline, so we have to be a little different.”

Be a Big Shot for Cheap while Playing Golf in Delta’s Sky Club

December 2, 2009 | Posted in: Delta,Frequent Flyer,Sports | 0 comments

Delta says, take a 30-day test run of our Sky Club – for just $90.

What do you get for that? All kinds of amenities, including – a putting green.

Oh, not at every Sky Club – but you will find these greens in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Dallas, Ft. Lauderdale, JFK, Orlando, Los Angeles, Salt Lake, Washington-Reagan, and W. Palm Beach. They also loan you Nike Golf gear, so you’ll be all set.

Of course, Sky Club memberships are cheaper if you sign up for a year ($500) or three years ($1,265) – but $90 seems quite doable – and quite worth it, if you fly a lot in a month.

Your Chances of Getting Bumped and Dating Supermodels

December 2, 2009 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airline News,Passengers,Sports | 0 comments

Your chances of getting bumped from an airline? I wouldn’t worry about it – the odds of that happening are about 1 in 10,040 – and that includes “voluntary” and “involuntary” bumping.

Compare that to your chances of winning the Mega Millions – 1 in 135,145,920. See? Now there are two things you don’t have to worry about.

Make that, three things you don’t have to worry about: as I wrote in my weekly column for ABCNew.com today, your odds of dating a supermodel are 1 in 178,110. Those odds do improve, however, if you live in New York or Los Angeles, you make a lot of money, and you are very handsome.

Oh, yeah – it also helps to be Tom Brady.

Golf in Orlando: Great Deals to “Best Golfing in North America”

November 23, 2009 | Posted in: Deals,Favorites,Sports | 0 comments

Golf lovers: Orlando has just been voted “North American Golf Destination” for 2010 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.

The award was in part for quality of Orlando’s golf and its service to players, but it might as well be for quantity, as well: the Florida resort town boasts 177 golf courses – plus, it’s host to more professional tour competitions than any other city.

Deals to Orlando? FareCompare’s Deal Finder has them: I see cheap flights in January from NY to Orlando for as little as $202 roundtrip – and what’s this? I see cheap flights from Chicago to Orlando for the even lower price of $187 roundtrip.

Hmm…was just thinking. A trip like this sure would make a nice holiday gift…

New $50 “Peak Travel Day” Surcharge for Day after Super Bowl

November 16, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Delta,Northwest,Sports | 0 comments

Maybe you won’t be going to Super Bowl XLIV, which will be played this February 7th in Miami, but you might be heading to some cool town to watch the game on TV with a lively crowd, so…

Just to let you know, Delta/Northwest has added a $50 one-way surcharge for travel to most of its cities for Monday, Feb. 8. This surcharge will be “folded” into the price of the ticket, so you might not notice, but it’s there.

In case you were wondering, miscellaneous surcharges are filed in the same manner fuel surcharges are. Plus, there are now 30 days with these miscellaneous surcharges, into 2010.

If you can swing it, you Super Bowl weekend travelers might want to head for home on Tuesday. See the details of the surcharge – as well as other dates – on my “insider” surcharge list.

Cheap Deals to New York to Boo/Cheer Yankees Parade

November 5, 2009 | Posted in: Deals,Sports,Travel Tips | 0 comments

You can just make it to the Yankees parade in New York City, if you hurry. The parade begins at 11am in Manhattan, and afterwards, Mayor Bloomberg gives the team the keys to the city.

And I’ve seen some surprisingly good deals for last minute flights, should you care to be there to cheer them on.

Or perhaps you Cubbies fans will want to boo them on – and you can, with this cheap flight from Chicago to New York for just $137 roundtrip – I found it just seconds ago (but it may not last).

Sick of sports? Then use Deal Finder and fly to your own celebration – and bring your own confetti.

College Football Fans: Deals to BCS Championship in Pasadena

November 4, 2009 | Posted in: Deals,Sports | 0 comments

The BCS championship game will be played in Pasadena’s Rose Bowl on January 7, 2010 – and although we don’t know what teams will be competing yet, you can always hope for the best, and start shopping.

We’ve found some pretty decent roundtrip deals to Southern California already, thanks to Deal Finder:

Bearcat fans: Cincinnati to Los Angeles, $288

Longhorn fans: Austin to Burbank, under $300

Gator fans: Gainesville to LA, $350

No, I don’t have a crystal ball – this contest could involve two other teams entirely – just throwing out some suggestions. Unfortunately, I have no suggestions as to how you’ll pay for tickets – one website is offering tickets starting at $595!

What – they getting this confused with the Super Bowl??
