Six Travel Mini-Disasters and How to Fix Them

You’re heading for a well-deserved vacation – or you’re already basking on the beach, when…

Disaster strikes!

Or  maybe, just a mini-disaster. You know, a stolen wallet, or a botched name on your airline tickets, or your suitcase arrives on the carousel with its only handle snapped off. What do you do?

I tackle those problems and more in my latest weekly column for ABCNews.com, called “Six Travel Mini-Disasters and How to Fix Them”.

For instance, if your wallet – or more to the point, your driver’s license or passport has been lost or stolen, get yourself to the nearest police station immediately. Making a report and leaving a paper trail can be vital to getting your goods back, or at least, proving that what you say happened, actually did.  Then you have to get yourself to the airport on departure day extra early – in case the TSA decides extra screening is needed for poor ID-less you.

Check out the column – it’s a fun read, and might save you some hassles down the road.

Save the Endangered Airplane Animals – Frontier’s Wildlife

March 31, 2010 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airfare News,Airline News,Pets | 2 comments

In my latest weekly column for ABCNews.com, I tackle the weighty issue of what might happen to Frontier Airlines animals if owner Republic decides to revamp branding.

I’m talking about those wildlife photos that grace the tails of Frontier’s aircraft: you know, Larry the Lynx, Rudy the Raccoon, Grizwald the Bear and more (yes, those are their names – it says so right on Frontier’s website).

If you read the column, here are a few things you’ll learn:

  • Qantas’ kangaroo once had wings
  • Three “animals” made the list of Top Advertising Icons of the Century: Tony the Tiger, the Energizer Bunny, and Elsie the Cow
  • A film parody shows “Hitler” ranting in support of Frontier’s wildlife: “Griz is going to tear someone a new one!”

Here’s how I end the column:

“For Flip and his associates, I hope it all works out. Otherwise, they’ll be headed to the Old Icons Retirement Home, where they can sit on the porch with Speedy Alka-Seltzer, the Frito Bandito, Mr. Whipple, and the Taco Bell Chihuahua – and reminisce about the days gone by.” –Rick Seaney, ABCNews.com, 3-31-10

No Cheap Flight Info Here, Just Me in a Hot Tub Time Machine

cheap flight hot tub time machine

I have to say I was a little taken aback when ABC asked me to come up with a few words on where’d I’d go in a hot tub time machine – until I remembered that the movie, “Hot Tub Time Machine” was coming out today.

Well in that case…I decided to visit Noah’s Ark. And since we’re in the midst of March Madness, my thoughts turned to basketball – and I figured who better to accompany me than one of the all time greats of NBA coaching, the late and lamented Red Auerbach.

So here’s my contribution to this ABCNews.com story:

So I’m in my hot tub time machine with my buddy Red Auerbach (hey, this is my fantasy). Naturally, we are smoking cigars. And schmoozing.

“Where to, Red?” I ask.

“Let’s make a fast break for Eastern Turkey,” says Red. “Mount Ararat.”

“Ah, Noah’s Ark, good choice.”

“Yeah, I want to see if I can get me two Larry Birds,” says Red, idly flicking an ash.

The World’s Most Dangerous Countries

March 24, 2010 | Posted in: ABC Column,Destinations,List,Travel Safety | 0 comments

You may not experience any problem in any of “the world’s most dangerous countries” but these are nations that the U.S. State Dept. has put out official “warnings” on – and you should read up on them, if traveling to any on the list.*

I wrote about this in my latest weekly column for ABCNews.com – based on an earlier post about the travel warning on Mexico.

As I noted in that post, millions visit Mexico safely every year, and the resort areas are by and large quite safe, but border towns have become increasingly violent.

My advice: no matter what country you travel to this year, take a moment to see what the State Dept. has to say about it, in its handy “country-specific” index.

You might learn a thing or two (I know I did).

*As of this writing, the “warning” list includes: Kenya; Haiti; Mexico; Colombia; Eritrea; Central African Republic; Yemen; Iraq; Saudi Arabia; Pakistan; Sudan; Somalia; Mauritania; Chad; Mali; Sri Lanka; Nepal; Algeria; Guinea; Lebanon; Cote d’Ivoire; Philippines; Democratic Republic of Congo; Israel, the West Bank and Gaza; Afghanistan; Burundi; Nigeria; Iran; Uzbekistan; and Georgia. Turbulence: Did an Airline Flight Attendant Just Go Flying Past?

Turbulence. It can occur on the best of flights, anytime of the year. And it can be a minor annoyance – or spill your drink all over your lap – or worse.

I delve into the subject in my latest weekly column for ABCNews.com and I learned a thing or two, including the following:

  • How many people are injured by turbulence each year? Answer: nearly 60 a year, in the U.S. alone.
  • Who are injured most frequently? Answer: flight attendants
  • Why do people get up to use the lavatory when the seat belt sign is on? Answer: take your pick between A.) cockiness or B.) cluelessness
  • What does “pancake batter” have to do with turbulence? Answer: read the column to find out

Read what a flight attendant has to say about turbulence (and she ought to know, since turbulence once left her knocked unconscious) and how something as simple as keeping your seat belt buckled can save untold misery.

Top Five Worst Travel Stories of the Week

The Ides of March don’t make an appearance until next week, but there’s been plenty of weirdness already, at least in the air travel sector recently - as I noted in my latest column for ABCNews.com: “Top Five Worst Travel Stories of the Week.”

You may have read about some of these bizarre incidents (the fake pilot, the way under-age air traffic controllers), but I provide a twist to all these stories – at the end of each, you will note I added an “Upside”.

I think you’ll enjoy it – although judging by a couple of the comments left by ABC readers at the end of the column, it seems to have left some really angry. Not sure why…

Yes, Civility Can Be Found on Some Flights

March 3, 2010 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airline News,Ask Rick,Passengers | 0 comments

That’s the topic of my latest weekly column for ABCNews.com – I talk about how, despite ugly stories about fights on planes, the “human touch” endures.

Well, not often enough, but it can still be found.

Take a look to see some of the more sterling examples I found – including the magnificent generousity of the people of Gander, Newfoundland, when planeloads of confused and terrified strangers began arriving at their door in the wake of Sept. 11th.

Top 7 Tips for Finding Cheaper Emergency/Bereavement Flights

February 24, 2010 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airline News,List,Tips and Tricks | 0 comments

I hope you never need to do this, but sometimes – at the last minute – you just have to get on a plane and go, whether it’s a death in the family or some other emergency.

And yes, four of the five legacy carriers do offer bereavement fares (American, Continental, Delta and United), but a 5-10% discount on an expensive “next day” flight can be so small as to be meaningless.

I tackle this problem in my latest column for ABCNews.com, and offer 7 tips to finding cheaper last minute airfare – for those times when you have to fly.

Strategies include ways to use those frequent flier miles, even if you don’t have enough for a roundtrip flight; using Twitter for last minute deals; driving a few hours to bigger airports (though I also point out the pitfalls of that).

Take a look at the column for all 7 strategies – because the last thing you want to do in an emergency is to add financial burdens to your emotional ones.
