DOT Fines United – Airlines Must Treat Passengers Fairly

DOT fines United Airlines Treat Passengers Fairly

The Dept. of Transportation (DOT) has fined United Airlines $30,000.

Here’s why: The carrier failed to include the “7.5% federal excise tax in fares in the initial search results page of its website”. Not that United failed to include it, mind you — that it wasn’t included in the initial search. According to the DOT, this lapse lasted just 60 hours, or two-and-a-half days.

United said this was a unique “programming error” and once they caught it, they immediately fixed it.

Good for them, but even better for us that the DOT is paying attention, and will not let even unintended errors slip by. Of course, it is the law – but it’s also, as the DOT’s Ray LaHood suggests, a matter of fair play: “Our fare advertising rules are designed to ensure that consumers know how much they will pay for a ticket and are able to compare prices when choosing which carrier to fly.”

Hear, hear.

actress cybill shepherd son theft plane

I guess this is “Celebrity Week” at FareCompare Labs – first we had a post about Halle Berry skipping the security line, then we had that post about uh, porn stars and body scans. And now – this:

Cyrus Shepherd-Oppenheim, the son of Cybill (“Taxi Driver”, “Moonlighting”) and former husband Bruce Oppenheim, was arrested Monday after his United flight from San Francisco arrived in Philadelphia. News reports say witnesses identified the 22-year old man as the suspect who rifled through their carryon bags during the six hour flight. Items recovered included a digital camera, cash, a small leather travel bag and more.

He is reportedly a student at the University of Pennsylvania – good school.

Fee Alert: United Joins Delta, Continental in Raising Bag Fees

fee alert united joins delta continental raising bag fees

First it was Delta, then Continental and now United is also raising checked bag fees. Here’s what all three airlines are now charging:

  • First checked-bag: $23 online, $25 at the airport
  • Second checked-bag: $32 online, $35 at the airport

As I said before, watch for even more carriers to fall in line.

3 TIPS: 1.) Don’t check a bag – save that money for vacation fun. 2.) If you must check a bag, do it online and save a few bucks. 3.) If you absolutely have to check it at the airline, don’t stiff the Skycap on the tip – he or she is affected by all this too, you know.

United’s Classy Move: Drops Change Fees in Advance of Storm

united classy move drops change fees advance storm

A big storm is brewing: look for snow and strong winds to batter the Midwest tonight and tomorrow, and a cold front moving into the Southeast.

So United Airlines is now urging its passengers who will be traveling to/from or through those regions to think about rescheduling, and they will drop the change fees — or, if you cancel altogether, you’ll get a refund. All the details are on the United website.

If you’re traveling on another airline, check the website. Delta is now letting Southeast travelers learn about their options, and chances are good the other airlines will be doing the same.

United Pilot Pleads Guilty to Being Above Alcohol Limits

united pilot guilty above alcohol limits

Back in November, Erwin Washington was in the cockpit of his United jetliner, getting ready to fly from London’s Heathrow to Chicago — when one of his co-workers smelled alcohol on him.

It can’t be an easy thing to call the cops on a fellow employee, but this unknown individual did, and I’m glad. Turns out Washington’s breath test for alcohol showed he was more than three times above the legal limit for pilots. You have to wonder: what was this guy thinking?

Anyway, according the Associated Press, the pilot pleaded guilty today in London. His lawyer says, he’s “remorseful.” He’s to be sentenced Feb. 5.

What could he get in the way of punishment? Well, the maximum sentence is 2 years in jail and a fine, but an American pilot who was found to have a slightly higher alcohol reading than Washington received a fine last summer, while another pilot was recently given a suspended sentence.

I’ll ask you: what do you think is an appropriate punishment?

Domestic Airlines Ring in the New Year with an Airfare Hike

January 2, 2010 | Posted in: Airfare News,Pricing Activity,United | 0 comments

airfare hike new year

Just so you know:

Wednesday evening (Dec. 30) the FareCompare.com proprietary airfare tracking system detected unusual system-wide airfare hike activity initiated by United Airlines.

Over 15,000 United city-pairs were increased by $6 and $10 roundtrip ($3 and $5 each way). The increase covered the bulk of United’s domestic route system — mainly at the $6 roundtrip level.

On New Year’s Eve, the remaining legacy airlines began to match including American, Delta/Northwest, US Airways, Continental and Alaska.

Please note: The hike did not have any effect on a variety of airfare sales in the domestic system for travel through early March. Legacy airlines also tiptoed around overlapping low cost airline routes (Southwest, JetBlue, AirTran) as the group has yet to participate in the hike.

This increase represents the 4th successful hike of 2009 compared to fifteen in 2008 and seventeen in 2007 — all since mid 2009.

Did You Survive the Great Snow Storm? Airline Twitter Helped

snow storm airline twitter

Yep, it was bad over the weekend– particularly in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area — well, in many many cites throughout the northeast.

If you were caught up in it, and are “twiterate” — okay, my word for Twitter-savvy — you were able to get some info from airline tweets (Jaunted noted that United and Virgin America did an especially good job at keeping folks updated via tweets).

And you probably know that many/most airlines are waiving their “change fees” (how could they not?).

Here’s hoping everyone is home for the holidays, and soon. Safe travels.

Breastfeeding Mom: Accidentally Smothered Baby on Plane?

December 2, 2009 | Posted in: Passengers,Travel Safety,Travel Tips,United | 0 comments

A terrible story is emerging regarding an incident that took place aboard a United flight last month. The details are from the Daily Mail.

It seems a woman who was traveling from Washington DC to Kuwait with her four-week old infant was breastfeeding the child – when at some point, the 29-year old mother dozed off. When she woke up, she began screaming – her child was not breathing, and had apparently been smothered. A doctor onboard tried to revive the little girl as the plane was diverted to Heathrow.

The baby was taken to a London hospital, but there was nothing that could be done.

British authorities have said, “this appears to be a tragic accident.”
